What cortisol actually does to your baby's sleep cycles

Cortisol gets a bad reputation in parenting circles. It shows up in conversations about stress, about babies left to cry, about the long-term consequences of feeling overwhelmed and unsupported. All of that is real. But cortisol is also one of the most misunderstood hormones in infant sleep, and understanding what it actually does — rather than what we've decided it symbolizes — changes how you respond at 3am in ways that matter.

What cortisol actually is

Cortisol is a glucocorticoid hormone produced by the adrenal glands. It plays a central role in the body's stress response, but describing it simply as a "stress hormone" misses most of what it does. Cortisol is also involved in metabolism, immune function, blood sugar regulation, and — critically — the regulation of the sleep-wake cycle.

Cortisol follows a diurnal rhythm, meaning it rises and falls across a 24-hour period in a predictable pattern. In healthy adult sleep, cortisol is at its lowest in the first hours after falling asleep and rises sharply in the early morning hours, reaching its peak just before or just after waking. This morning surge is part of what makes you feel alert when you wake. It is not a sign that something has gone wrong. It is the system working as designed.

How infant cortisol rhythms develop

Here is where it gets interesting for parents of young babies: newborns do not have an established cortisol rhythm at birth. The diurnal cortisol pattern — that reliable rise-and-fall cycle — takes months to develop, and it develops in large part through environmental cues, most importantly light exposure and the rhythms of the caregiving relationship.

This is one of the reasons newborn sleep feels so chaotic. It is not just that their stomachs are small and they need to feed frequently. It is that their entire hormonal architecture around sleep and waking is still being constructed, and they need external input — your rhythms, your presence, the light and dark of the environment — to help calibrate it.

Most babies begin showing a recognizable cortisol rhythm somewhere between three and six months. By around six months, the diurnal pattern is usually well established, which is one of the reasons sleep often consolidates around this time.

Your baby's cortisol rhythm is not something you can rush. It develops through consistent environmental cues and a stable caregiving relationship — not through sleep training or schedule enforcement.

Cortisol and the overtired baby

You may have heard that overtired babies produce cortisol, which is why they become wired rather than sleepy when they've been awake too long. This is true, and it's one of the most useful pieces of physiology to understand as a parent.

When a baby has been awake past their comfortable wake window, the body begins producing cortisol as a compensatory mechanism, essentially trying to maintain alertness in the face of mounting sleep pressure. This cortisol spike does several things:

The practical takeaway is straightforward: catching the sleep window before overtiredness sets in is one of the highest-leverage things you can do for infant sleep. Not because you are avoiding cortisol as though it were dangerous, but because you are working with the body's rhythm rather than against it.

Cortisol and night waking

Cortisol rises naturally in the second half of the night as part of the morning wake preparation. This means that night wakings after around 3 or 4am are often partially driven by this physiological rise, and they are frequently harder to settle than earlier wakings. This is not a behavioral problem. It is cortisol doing its job.

Understanding this can genuinely change how you feel about the early morning wake. It is not a failure of your settling strategy. It is not evidence that your baby has formed a bad habit. It is a hormonal shift that happens in every human body, arriving earlier in babies than in adults because their systems are still calibrating.

What this means for how you respond

The nervous system framing of infant sleep asks a different question than the behavioral framing. Instead of asking how to train the baby to stop signaling, it asks what conditions allow the nervous system to settle most easily.

Cortisol is one part of that picture. A consistent sleep environment, predictable wake windows, responsive settling, and a regulated caregiver are all inputs that support the development of a stable cortisol rhythm over time. None of this is about doing it perfectly. It is about understanding the system well enough to work with it, especially on the hard nights when everything else has gone sideways.

Your baby is not broken. Their cortisol is doing exactly what cortisol does. And knowing that, even a little, can make 3am feel less like a problem and more like just the middle of the night.
